News Staff posted on April 29, 2014 16:40

On Tuesday, April 29, 2014, HAI hosted the inaugural East Coast Helicopter Operations (ECHO) spring conference. ECHO was established in 2013 as a way for EMS and Law Enforcement flight programs to share experiences, mutually train, and develop partnerships among helicopter operators.

More than 70 members from nearly two dozen different public safety and law enforcement, military and EMS programs from North Carolina to New Jersey attended.

Flight crews attending the initial conference discussed topics ranging from active shooter response and coordination and communication for mass casualty helicopter response to effective Crew Resource Management and Washington DC airspace coordination (in both the Special Flight Rules Area and Flight Restricted Zone) with representatives from the FAA, NCRCC, Potomac TRACON and Dulles and National Airport towers.

E.C.H.O. Press Release

The E.C.H.O. (East Coast Helicopter Operations) group, established in 2013, is currently planning an exciting training seminar that will take place April 29, 2014. ECHO was formed to allow EMS and Law Enforcement flight programs to share experiences, mutually train, and develop partnerships among helicopter operators.

The seminar will be held at HAI headquarters in Alexandria, Va.  Training topics will include:  Law Enforcement Aviation and HEMS response to active shooting incidents, Debrief of the VSP aircraft shooting in Appomattox County, Va. and N.C.R.C.C., Regan Tower, and Dulles Tower on operations in the Flight Restricted Zone (FRZ).

E.C.H.O. was founded by operational flight programs to take advantage of joint training opportunities in a less formal and no cost / low cost environment. The group is not meant to replace formal training venues and associations. It was created and designed as a way to informally utilize the wealth of knowledge and experiences brought forth by individual flight programs and their crews.

In these training opportunities, the ECHO group discusses, brainstorms, and attempts to resolve issues common to public safety and EMS flight programs. These gatherings also provide flight crews the chance for different operators to share knowledge and gain insight from subject matter experts.

E.C.H.O. will strive to sponsor at least two training conferences per year.  These opportunities will vary based on the wants and needs of the members participating.  Training will move to various flight program locations that are willing to sponsor an event.
